Momentum Builds for Education Freedom at CSF Partner Summit

Last week, Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund joined partners from across the country at the Children's Scholarship Fund Partner Summit in New York City—an energizing gathering of leaders committed to expanding access to educational opportunity.

During the summit, our Executive Director, Andy Ryan, was invited to speak on the growing potential of Education Freedom Tax Credits (EFTC) and what they can mean for states, schools, and families. As more states explore this flexible funding mechanism, the conversation focused on how EFTC programs can open doors—giving families greater access to the learning environments that best meet their children’s needs while strengthening the broader education landscape.

Beyond the sessions, the summit offered something just as valuable: connection. From longtime partners to new collaborators, the room was filled with individuals and organizations working toward the same goal—empowering families with education freedom. These moments of shared insight and collaboration continue to drive the work forward.

The takeaway was clear: momentum is building. And with it, a renewed commitment to ensuring more families have access to the opportunities they deserve.

From Uncertain to Unstoppable: How Renaissance School is Changing Students’ Futures

Learn how Renaissance School s transforming student outcomes, boosting confidence, academic growth, and brighter futures through access to the right school.

Renaissance School grew out of a shared vision in 2016, when Courtney Klotz joined forces with others passionate about supporting students with learning differences. Inspired by her daughter, Mary-Camila, who faced significant challenges despite her many talents, Courtney worked alongside dyslexia specialists and educators. Together, they transformed a small homeschool hybrid into a full school. Mary-Camila's journey shaped the school’s collaborative mission. Everyone involved believed that, together, they could create a place where each learner’s strengths and needs were honored every day.

Today, Mary-Camila is graduating from Flagler College a year early as a presidential scholarship recipient, and she’s headed to begin her career with Disney.

Mary-Camila’s transformation didn’t happen by chance. It happened because she was given access to the right environment, one designed to meet her where she was.

That experience inspired Courtney to get more involved, eventually working at Renaissance herself—even stepping in without pay when finances were tight. The school’s approach is rooted in

Today, Renaissance School serves students through the Alabama CHOOSE Act and with tuition made possible through Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund. This support doesn’t just keep the doors open—it creates stability, even allowing the school to set aside emergency funds and build for the future.

She recently earned a silver medal in a scholastic fiction writing contest, an opportunity she says she “never had the chance” to pursue before. She credits the school’s smaller classes and collaborative environment, where “teachers and friends help each other figure things out.”

, also in 9th grade, describes a completely different experience from his previous school. Once struggling with mental health challenges in what he called a “chaotic and crazy” environment, he now says he’s in a “great spot.” His ADHD is more manageable, he’s proud of his ability to focus, and he’s found mentorship through his coach. Next fall, he plans to take dual enrollment classes—something that once felt out of reach.

While each student’s story is unique, one thing remains constant; many came from environments that were overwhelming, unsupportive, or even harmful. At Renaissance School, they found something different: structure, encouragement, and a community that believes in them.

They’re not just catching up, they’re moving forward with confidence. And maybe most importantly, they’re hopeful.

           Why It Matters

When families are given access to the right educational environment, outcomes can change dramatically. What once looked like a dead end can become a launching point—for college, careers, and a future filled with possibility.

Mary-Camila’s story started with uncertainty. Today, it’s a testament to what’s possible when students are seen, supported, and given the opportunity to succeed.

And there are more students just like her ready for their chance.

By working together, we’re streamlining processes for schools while creating a more seamless experience for families. The goal is simple: reduce administrative burden, improve access, and help more students find the right educational environment for their needs.

Investing in a Lifetime, Not Just an Education

A single mother shares how scholarships made 13 years of faith-based education possible for her daughters, and the lifelong impact of that support.

I am writing with a heart full of gratitude to thank you for the incredible blessing your organization has been to my family. For many years, my twin daughters, Camryn and Sophie Hendrix, were recipients of your scholarships from kindergarten through 12th grade, all of which were used at Marshall Christian Academy. As a single mother, I can say with complete honesty that I would not have been able to provide them with a private, Christian education without your support.

Because of your generosity, my girls were able to grow not only academically, but spiritually. They were taught in an environment where faith, character, and excellence were valued daily. They built friendships, developed confidence, and were surrounded by teachers who poured into their lives in ways that will impact them forever. You did not just provide financial assistance—you helped shape who they are becoming.

Filling out the final renewal form for their senior year was truly bittersweet. I found myself overwhelmed with emotion, wondering how we had reached this milestone so quickly. It feels like just yesterday they were walking into school as kindergartners, and now they are preparing to step into the next chapter of their lives. Every single year of their education has been touched by your generosity, and that is something I will never take for granted.

Your program has changed my life as well. You gave me peace of mind during seasons that were uncertain, and you gave my daughters opportunities I could not have given them on my own. That is a gift I will carry with me always. I will forever be grateful, and I will always share my story with others, so they understand the true impact of what you do.

Thank you for believing in families like mine. Thank you for investing in my daughters. Thank you for making a difference that will last a lifetime.

            With deepest gratitude,

, sat down with our own Tonya Jones. What unfolded was more than a policy discussion, it was a deeply personal, practical look at how education choice is opening doors for families across Alabama.

A Personal Journey That Fuels a Mission

Tonya’s path to education advocacy didn’t start in a boardroom—it started in Bruton, Alabama. Growing up with limited access to educational opportunities, she saw firsthand how a lack of options can shape a child’s future.

Her career journey—spanning accounting, education, and nonprofit work—eventually led her to AOSF, where she now helps families navigate opportunities she didn’t always have herself. That perspective isn’t theoretical. It’s lived experience. And it’s what drives her commitment to making sure every family has access to the right educational fit for their child.

           Understanding the Alabama Accountability Act

A big part of the conversation focused on the Alabama Accountability Act—the law that makes our scholarships possible.

Tonya helped cut through the confusion, explaining:

            Who qualifies for scholarships

            How eligibility is determined

The shift from labeling “failing schools” to identifying today’s “priority schools”

The takeaway? This isn’t about labeling schools—it’s about giving families options when their current situation isn’t working.

           Clearing Up Misconceptions

School choice can come with a lot of noise and a lot of misconceptions.

One of the most important clarifications from the conversation: accountability still matters. Scholarship programs have safeguards in place, and families are making intentional, informed decisions about their children’s education.

Another myth? That these opportunities only benefit a select few. In reality, programs like ours are designed to expand access—especially for families who might otherwise have limited options.

           Real Students. Real Impact.

Policy is one thing. Outcomes are another.

Tonya and Neonta shared powerful stories of students who found success after transferring to schools that better matched their learning styles, needs, and goals. These aren’t edge cases, they’re proof points.

When students are in the right environment, everything changes: confidence, engagement, and long-term success.

Here’s what parents need to know:

Education Savings Accounts (ESAs): up to $7,000 for students in school-based settings and up to $2,000 for homeschool students

Flexible spending: Funds can be used for tuition, curriculum, tutoring, and other approved education expenses

            Application deadlines: March 31, 2026

Programs like the CHOOSE Act aren’t just about funding, they’re about flexibility and empowerment.

           Why This Conversation Matters

At the heart of it all is a simple idea: education isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Families deserve the ability to choose environments where their children can thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally. And when they’re given that opportunity, the ripple effects go far beyond the classroom.

This episode of The Advocate’s Chair serves as both a guide and a reminder:

           The tools exist

           The pathways are there

           And the impact is real

For parents, educators, and advocates alike, it’s worth paying attention—because the future of education in Alabama is being shaped right now.

Because every child deserves more than a system, they deserve a right fit.

School Spotlight: The Rock Academy

For families in the rural communities of Russell and Lee County, finding the right school fit hasn’t always been easy. That’s exactly the gap The Rock Academy set out to fill.

As a newer K–12 Christian school with an inclusive preschool program,

is grounded in a clear mission: deliver a high-quality education while shaping students academically, spiritually, and personally. Or, as Founder and Principal Kristi puts it, “We strive to cultivate academic excellence, spiritual growth, and character development in our students.” No fluff, just a straightforward commitment to doing school differently, and do it well.

At its core, The Rock Academy blends strong academics with intentional faith formation. The school follows Alabama State Standards while incorporating best-practice teaching strategies, but what sets it apart is how learning is framed. Every subject is taught through a Christian worldview, weaving biblical principles into daily instruction rather than treating them as an add-on.

The result? Students aren’t just checking boxes on academic benchmarks; they’re building a foundation that connects knowledge, values, and purpose.

This isn’t your standard elective block. It’s a built-in opportunity for students to explore interests, develop skills, and maybe even discover a future calling. Offerings range from athletics like football, basketball, and soccer to hands-on and creative options like cooking, drama, media, and cosmetology.

Even better, Purpose Time is offered at no cost to families (though a few specialized classes may have small additional fees). In a world where extracurriculars can quickly become expensive add-ons, that accessibility matters.

Like many schools, The Rock Academy has faced its share of challenges—particularly when it comes to fundraising. But if there’s one thing that comes through clearly, it’s this: they’re not slowing down.

           Why It Matters

In rural communities, educational options can be limited. The Rock Academy is changing that narrative by offering families something they’ve been asking for: a school that prioritizes academic rigor, faith, and real-world skill-building all under one roof.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about having more choices. It’s about helping families find the right one, and making sure they can afford it.

And for a growing number of families in Russell and Lee County, The Rock Academy is exactly that.

Momentum continues to build around the new federal Education Freedom Tax Credit, and recent national polling confirms something advocates have long believed: parents understand the value of educational opportunity—and they are ready to support it.

of school parents support the federal tax credit for K–12 scholarships, including about one-third who say they strongly support it.

This level of support reflects a growing national consensus that families should have more flexibility when it comes to their child’s education. Parents want options that fit their child’s needs—whether that means a private school, specialized tutoring, or other learning opportunities.

Scholarship programs funded through tax-credit donations help make those options possible, particularly for families who might not otherwise be able to afford them.

Perhaps the most encouraging finding for scholarship organizations is that parents are not just supportive, they are willing to participate.

            The EdChoice survey found

           38% of school parents

say they are “extremely” or “very” likely to donate to a scholarship granting organization if their state participates in the tax credit program.

That level of potential participation highlights something powerful: parents do not simply want educational freedom for their own children, they want to help make it possible for other families as well.

committing our state to participate in the Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit program. That means Alabama students and families will be able to benefit from this new law starting in 2027.

This federal credit doesn’t replace state tax-credit scholarships like the one AOSF administers now, it

           adds another powerful tool

to the education freedom toolkit. It allows donors to support scholarships above and beyond state programs, amplifying impact without extra cost.

In practical terms, that means donors will be able to support scholarships above and beyond existing state programs, amplifying the number of students who can benefit—without creating additional financial burden for taxpayers.

For families across Alabama, that combination of state and federal opportunity has the potential to expand access to schools and learning environments that best meet their children’s needs. And if the latest national polling is any indication, parents are not only supportive of these opportunities—they are ready to help make them possible.

           Why This Matters for Alabama

Alabama has already said yes to this national opportunity. In January 2026,

Governor Kay Ivey signed an executive order

           adds another powerful tool

to the education freedom toolkit. It allows donors to support scholarships above and beyond state programs, amplifying impact without extra cost.

The scholarships funded through the Education Freedom Tax Credit are meant to help

K-12 students from families with household incomes up to roughly 300% of the area median income,

that covers most families who still struggle with education costs.

AOSF will steward these contributions responsibly: prioritizing families with financial need and empowering parents with real choice.

           The Bottom Line

The Education Freedom Tax Credit is more than a tax perk, it’s a tool to unlock opportunity for Alabama children. For donors, it’s smart tax planning. For families, it’s access to schools and services that fit each child. For the state, it’s a step toward broader educational freedom without new taxes or mandates.

We’re ready to meet this moment and make every dollar count where it matters most; in the hands of families choosing the best path for their child’s education.

When you give to support K–12 scholarships, not all tax incentives are created equal — and knowing the difference can help make your gift go further.

So if you donate $1,000 and you’re in a 24% tax bracket, that gift might reduce your tax bill by roughly $240. It’s helpful — but the value depends on your tax rate and whether you itemize your deductions.

So a $1,000 tax credit knocks $1,000 off the taxes you owe. Simple, straightforward, predictable — and often worth much more than a deduction.

Scholarships at Work: Faith Academy Spotlight

When donors give to the Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund, they’re not just funding tuition.

They’re opening doors to schools like Faith Academy in Mobile — places where students are known, supported, challenged, and grounded in faith.

Faith Academy is a private Christian school committed to developing the whole child: academically, spiritually, and personally. Excellence isn’t just a tagline there. It’s woven into the classroom, the stage, the football field, and the daily rhythms of school life.

And for many families, access to that kind of education is only possible because of scholarship support.

           Academic Support That Changes Trajectories

One of the standout features of Faith Academy is its comprehensive academic support services, including a dedicated dyslexia program.

For students with dyslexia, targeted instruction and specialized resources aren’t “nice to have.” They’re essential. Faith Academy’s program ensures students receive structured support tailored to how they learn — giving them the tools to thrive, not just survive, in the classroom.

For a donor, that means this: your gift could be the reason a child who once struggled to read gains confidence, keeps pace with peers, and begins to see school as a place of possibility instead of frustration.

That’s not abstract impact. That’s daily, tangible transformation.

A Fine Arts Program That Builds Confidence

Scholarship students at Faith Academy don’t just attend class — they participate fully in campus life.

The Fine Arts department is a vibrant part of the school community. The choral program includes multiple ensembles exploring musical styles from classical and sacred to contemporary. Band instruction begins in fifth grade, with opportunities to join the award-winning Marching Band and Jazz Band.

High school students can take drama as an elective — this year’s production featured Frozen — and many pursue private lessons in voice, piano, or guitar to further develop their talents.

For some students, the stage or the band room is where confidence is born. Scholarships make sure financial barriers don’t keep a child from discovering a gift that could shape their future.

Clubs That Shape Character and Leadership

Education at Faith Academy extends well beyond the classroom.

The student-led Faith Club, open to grades 10–12, encourages students to live out their Christian faith through service and fellowship. It’s leadership in action — students serving others and strengthening their spiritual foundation.

           Other extracurriculars include:

Chess Club, where strategy and problem-solving take center stage

Robotics Club, introducing middle and high school students to STEM through hands-on design and programming

These experiences build critical thinking, teamwork, and resilience — the kinds of skills that last long after graduation.

And again, scholarship funding ensures students can access all of it.

A Holistic Education, Made Possible by Generosity

Faith Academy offers a holistic education grounded in Christian values and a commitment to excellence. Academic rigor, specialized support, spiritual formation, and meaningful extracurricular opportunities come together to create an environment where students can flourish.

Kelly Beasley, administrator at Faith Academy, shares:

“The Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund opens doors for students who would not otherwise have the option to attend Faith Academy. These scholarships don’t just cover tuition — they create access to academic support, spiritual formation, and opportunities that help students thrive. We are grateful for donors who make that possible.”

           What Your Support Really Means

When you give to AOSF, you are not just funding a line item.

           You are:

Supporting a child with dyslexia who needs specialized instruction

This is what scholarship funding looks like in Alabama.

It looks like opportunity. It looks like confidence. It looks like excellence made accessible.

And it starts with donors who believe every child deserves a chance to thrive.

The Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC) is a federal tax credit that lets Alabama taxpayers reduce their federal income tax liability by donating to a qualified Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) like the Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund.

When you give, you get a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit, not just a deduction, for your contribution.

Key benefit: Donate up to $1,700 per individual and cut your federal tax bill by the exact same amount.

This makes the EFTC one of the most impactful tools for supporting

           school choice

           How This Works With AOSF

           Here’s the simple version:

            You donate to AOSF

(up to the annual credit limit).

You claim the federal tax credit

             when you file your taxes.

AOSF uses those funds to provide scholarships

             to eligible Alabama students.

Those scholarships can help families cover tuition and other approved education expenses, opening doors that may have otherwise stayed closed.

Same tax dollars. Bigger impact. Closer to home.

Why This Is a Big Deal for Alabama

Alabama families already rely on scholarship programs to access schools that meet their children’s academic, social, and emotional needs. But demand consistently outpaces available funding.

The Education Freedom Tax Credit adds a

           new stream of support,

and it doesn’t replace existing state programs. It builds on them.

           That means:

            More students can be served

            More families can access options

More donors can be part of the solution

It’s not about shifting money around. It’s about expanding opportunity.

            This program is focused on

Scholarships funded through this credit can help bridge that gap.

At AOSF, our role is straightforward: Make sure donor dollars are used responsibly and directed to students who need them most.

…this is a program worth planning for.

           The Bottom Line

The Education Freedom Tax Credit gives donors a smart way to give and gives families a powerful way to choose.

It’s not complicated. It’s not abstract. It’s a practical tool that can change real students’ lives — and AOSF is ready to help Alabama families make the most of it.

More opportunity. More access. More Alabama students finding the right fit. That’s a future worth investing in.

Sherri Rowton, Development Director, shares why she supports school choice for all Alabama families.

I was fortunate to grow up in a family where education was always a top priority. My mother was a first-generation college graduate who spent her career as an elementary school teacher. My father overcame a difficult childhood by enlisting in the military, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and two graduate degrees. From an early age, I saw how education can open doors and change the trajectory of a life. I later spent two decades as a fundraiser for Auburn University, where I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education. Our generous donors gave so that others could earn an education—something no one could ever take away from them. But that foundation must begin well before college, equipping students for lives in which they, and their families, can truly flourish.

That is why Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund is so invaluable. Through the generosity of our supporters, we empower parents to choose the school and learning environment that best fits the needs of their children—whether public, private, homeschool, or microschools.

My own family experienced the difference the right school can have. Our local public school provided my older son with exactly what he needed to succeed; he is now a college graduate with a full-time career. My younger son, however, needed an environment with more structure than his school could provide. We were able to find a setting that better met his needs, and he is now a college senior—an outcome I sincerely doubt would have been possible without that change.

It is my honor and privilege to work alongside such generous donors who make opportunities like these possible for families across Alabama. Education freedom is truly a win-win for families, for our donors, and for the future of our state.

I grew up in rural Alabama (Escambia County). My mother and father did the best they could to offer us the best opportunities growing up. My mother was an avid reader. She was forever attached to a book. I always wondered how she could read so many books and so quickly. Soon after, I was enjoying the transformation into new experiences, times and places through reading.

But not all in the family were reading or even attempting to read. I soon noticed there was a difference in how my parents managed our schoolwork. My dad was never present to read or sign report cards, read incoming mail or anything at all. My mother confirmed that he never learned to read. My reality was that my father, one of the smartest humans that I know, could not read. He was a resource of car knowledge for the community and was doing it without ever reading.

My heart felt for him and the isolation he must have felt as part of an ever-changing technological society and not being able to keep up. Though he was not an educated man, that did not stop him from wanting more for his children.

My sister and I attended the local public school, and my brother attended the private school in the area. Though different, each gave us what we needed to be successful.

My choice adventure began with my own children moving them from private to public after settling in a better school district. It has continued over the last 25 years as I assisted students and parents through administering private school vouchers, private and charter school staff support, and my roles within scholarship granting organizations starting in 2013.

There are many options available for Alabama’s K-12 students. As a part of the AOSF staff, I encourage, inspire, and empower parents to make knowledgeable decisions about the educational future of their students. Knowledge is power. Everyone deserves it. That is why I do what I do.

My Why: Casandra's School Choice Story

Meet Casandra Meguiar, our Development Manager, learn why school choice matters to her families and to families across Alabama.

Casandra Meguiar, Development Manager, shares why she supports school choice for all Alabama families.

In high school, I started each morning walking through a metal detector and being sniffed by K-9 units before heading to homeroom. Teachers sat at their desks in silence while the class erupted in chatter. Other times, teachers gave us 50-page worksheet packets and sat in the back of the classroom reading a book. With nearly 30+ students in each class, we were lucky if we got through roll call without disruptions. Lunch was the worst, as the entire school went on lunch for an entire hour—an hour of courtyard brawls, lunches being stolen, classrooms defaced, and gun threats.

I had always loved school, but I began to dread it. I needed smaller class sizes. I needed teachers who cared. I went to my school counselors to see if I could be switched to the IB program. Those students had smaller class sizes and seemed to be a community. Despite my A/B honor roll grades, my counselor insisted that it would be too challenging for me and to stick with standard classes.

Stuck in disruptive classrooms, I worked diligently to ensure that my grades didn’t slip, but they slowly fell from A/B honor roll to average. Determined to get out of the school that didn’t serve my needs, I begged my dad to put me in a different school. My school wasn’t working for me.

Private school was not an option for us as a low-income family of six. Magnet schools were either full or had a waitlist. Taking my pleas seriously, my father found a solution. It wasn’t ideal, but it would get me into a better school.

My father gave my grandparents Power of Attorney over me, and I moved into their home. This bittersweet solution allowed me to receive a better education at the public school in their school district, where I graduated cum laude with 12 college credits.

I know that it was the right choice for my education, but the system was broken. My education may have been free, but there was a cost.

I missed my siblings, and even though blood isn’t a bond that distance can erase, the distance has never seemed to heal itself, even now.

On a nearly weekly basis, families call with stories that remind me of my own. Parents searching for opportunities to help their children escape a failing school district. Whether the child is being bullied, not able to learn in an over-crowded classroom, or isn’t receiving the help they need, there should be an option for these families to go somewhere—an option that can help their child thrive in school instead of passively floating through the system. That’s why I do this work. I do it for the families that need this, who wouldn’t likely have this opportunity without our work. If there had been a program like AOSF when I was in school, maybe we could have found a different solution. A solution that didn’t cost so much. One that could have kept a family under the same roof.

Abbie Schofield, Operations Manager, shares why she supports school choice for all Alabama families.

I grew up in a wonderful small city with a fantastic public school system. For the most part, every teacher I had was kind and loving, with a genuine desire not only to teach students but to nurture them as well. Still, all I wanted to do was leave.

In elementary school, I came home crying, begging my parents to send me to a local Christian school that many of my friends from church attended. I was bullied consistently to the point that school felt unbearable for several years. I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t able to go to school with my friends—though I do now. It was a sacrifice my family simply couldn’t afford, and we were stuck. Had our scholarship program existed at the time, we would have qualified.

Now, whenever I talk with a parent asking about our program, I hear the same desperation in their voice that I remember from my own mother—a longing for a happier, safer place for their child to learn.

I think about one of my best friends, whose ADHD made it incredibly difficult for her to focus in a large classroom. I think of the girl I tutored in high school who dropped out as soon as she was legally able because she needed a different environment. I learned that just because a student wants—or even needs—to leave a school, it doesn’t mean the school is bad, failing, or anything short of excellent. Sometimes children simply need an environment better suited to how they learn or a place where they feel safe enough to do so. And parents deserve the ability to help their children find that, regardless of income.

Things did improve as I got older. I graduated fourth in my class as Senior Class President, Color Guard Captain, and Student of the Year. I also served as president of several other clubs, worked part-time, and took on as many activities as possible. Why? Because I wanted to afford college. I needed a scholarship.

I still remember my school counselor telling me plainly that without scholarships, my dream of attending the University of Alabama might not be possible. Hearing that from someone who knew both my academic ability and my family’s financial reality made the stakes unmistakably clear.

As options continued to fall through and it became clear that my university scholarships and Pell Grants wouldn’t be enough, I was notified that I had been selected to receive an endowed scholarship—one that truly changed my life. With that support, it became more affordable to attend UA than to stay local and live at home.

I don’t know that the local family who made this possible will ever fully understand the impact of their gift. I think about them often when I speak with our generous donors who simply want to help children learn, grow, and make educational choices that are likely to change the lives of those students as well.

Meghan Presnell, Marketing Director, shares why she supports school choice for all Alabama families.

Imagine purchasing your first home, preparing to welcome your second child into the world—and then the housing market crashes. What was meant to be a small starter home suddenly looks like it might be your forever home. Fast forward three years, and it’s time to send your firstborn to kindergarten—except the school you’re zoned for is consistently failing. What should be an exciting milestone for a family is instead fraught with anxiety.

So we toured every elementary school we could, hoping the district would allow us to choose a better fit. In the end, our application was denied. That was my reality in 2012.

But giving up was never an option. For four exhausting months, I jumped through administrative hoops, made endless calls to district offices, and even recruited my mother-in-law—a former teacher and administrator in the district—to lean on her contacts. Eventually, midway through the kindergarten year, through public school choice, we landed at an elementary school that was right for our child.

           That decision changed everything.

From that point forward, my children used school choice throughout their entire K–12 experience. In sixth grade, both transitioned to a small K–12 university lab school—an environment that offered opportunities simply not available to them otherwise. The school’s small size gave them access to opportunities much earlier than usual, including high school courses and dual enrollment college classes. Both of my children participated in sports and were exposed to JV and varsity athletics as early as middle school.

Academically and career-wise, the impact was just as profound. Through the lab school’s CNA program, my daughter earned her certification while still in school—an opportunity that directly led to a highly sought-after position in a hospital emergency room. The hands-on experience she gained there didn’t just build skills; it clarified her future, guiding her to major in Public Health with plans to attend P.A. school after graduation. That’s not a “nice-to-have” outcome. That’s a life-altering one.

Sadly, very few parents have the time, resources, or insider knowledge to fight the way we did. That reality is exactly why I come to work each day and advocate for education opportunities for all children.

No family should feel anxious about sending their child to a school that’s a poor fit. No child should be assigned a future based solely on a zip code. For our family, we lost four months of kindergarten—a small fraction of a K–12 journey. But too many families across the country lose years of access to high-quality education their children deserve.

That’s unacceptable. We can do better. And I’m proud to devote my time and talents to making that happen.

My Why: The Stories Behind School Choice

Meet the people behind our work and discover why school choice matters—through personal stories of opportunity, access, and impact.

Andy Ryan, Executive Director, shares why he supports school choice for all Alabama Families

Most Americans don’t talk about the American Dream as much as we used to, but for my family, the American Dream and education are inseparable.

My mother grew up in an immigrant household of migrant farmers. She and her eight siblings would all pack into a single station wagon and drive from farm to farm across the West, harvesting vegetables, until my grandfather became partially paralyzed in a work accident. They eventually settled in South Texas, where my mom found herself in a second-grade Catholic school classroom without a word of English in her vocabulary. My grandparents couldn’t afford tuition for her and her siblings, but they insisted she receive a great Catholic education because they wanted a better life for her and made many sacrifices to make that happen. She became the first in her family to graduate high school, then college, and eventually earn her Master’s degree. She spent the majority of her career in public schools working with at-risk students across North Texas, giving back in the same way she was given an opportunity.

My father likewise spent his career in the classroom (

           he’s retiring this May—

           congrats

           , Dad!

), so you could say education is in my blood. Just as my grandparents made huge sacrifices to ensure my parents could attend great schools, my parents did the same for my brother and me.

Seeing my parents work in the school systems, I knew from an early age that the system wasn’t perfect. I spent a lot of time at the school where my mom worked, and it looked very different than mine.

Why was the school she worked at—the “bad” public school in the “bad” part of town—old and rickety compared to the newly built one down the road from us in the nicer part of town?

She drives over there every day to work; don’t those kids want to drive over here for school? But I also knew that our schools were doing tremendous good. Why else would my grandparents have done everything in their power to secure a great American education for my mother?

It’s educators like my parents that help make American education a steppingstone to a better life and are the inspiration for why I do what I do.

I sometimes think about how my mom must have felt walking into her San Antonio classroom, unable to speak to her teachers or classmates. She couldn’t have known how profoundly it would change her life’s trajectory or the impact it would one day have on her son. Education is the way we keep the American Dream alive. We owe the next generation the same promise that my grandparents gave my parents, and that my parents gave me. I’m incredibly grateful to play a small part in making that dream accessible to every kid.

When students flourish, communities grow stronger, and Alabama moves forward.
