A Thankful Heart: The Lasting Impact of Your Generosity

November 2, 2026

November is a time to reflect on the people, opportunities and moments we are grateful for. At the Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund, there is plenty to celebrate, but at the top of our list are the donors who make educational opportunities possible for Alabama families.

Every scholarship represents more than financial assistance. It represents a parent who can pursue the school they believe is right for their child, a student who can discover their potential and a school that can welcome another family through its doors.

And behind every one of those opportunities is someone who chose to give.

A Future Full of Possibilities

This year, we celebrated a particularly special milestone: students who began their educational journeys with AOSF when the Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund first opened its doors in 2013 are now graduating from high school.

Their next chapters look different, but each is filled with possibility. From pursuing mechanical engineering at Tuskegee University to studying kinesiology, business management and early childhood education, these graduates are taking the next steps toward futures they are excited to build.

For the donors who helped make their educational journeys possible, these milestones are a reminder that the impact of generosity doesn't end when a scholarship is awarded. It continues with every opportunity, accomplishment and dream that follows.

An Investment That Reaches Beyond the Classroom

Sometimes, the most powerful measure of a scholarship's impact comes directly from the families who experience it.

Jennifer Hendrix knows that impact firsthand. Her twin daughters, Camryn and Sophie, received AOSF scholarships from kindergarten through 12th grade, attending Marshall Christian Academy. As a single mother, Jennifer shared that providing a private, Christian education for her daughters would not have been possible without the support of donors.

The experience gave her daughters more than an education. It gave them an environment where they could grow academically and spiritually, build confidence and develop relationships that will stay with them long after graduation.

In Jennifer's words, donors weren't simply helping provide an education. They were investing in who her daughters would become.

That's the kind of impact that lasts a lifetime.

Helping Schools Open Doors for More Families

Donor generosity also helps strengthen the educational communities that serve Alabama students.

In Auburn, St. Michael's Catholic School is creating an environment where strong academics, faith formation and individualized student support come together. As an AOSF partner school, St. Michael's offers families another educational option, including an environment equipped to support students with a range of learning needs.

For Principal Debbie Brooks, scholarship opportunities help remove a financial barrier for families who want their children to experience a faith-based education.

When more families can access schools like St. Michael's, more students have the opportunity to find an environment where they feel supported, challenged and encouraged to grow.

Thank You for Being Part of the Story

These are just a few examples of what your generosity makes possible across Alabama. Behind every scholarship is a student with potential, a family with hopes for the future and a school ready to make a difference.

We know that giving is a choice. And we never take lightly the trust our donors place in the Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund.

As we reflect on all there is to be grateful for this November, we want to say thank you. Thank you for opening doors, creating opportunities and helping write the next chapter for students across our state.

From all of us at AOSF, thank you for being part of the story!

Every child learns differently. Every family has different priorities. And finding the right educational environment often starts with understanding the options available. In Alabama, those options continue to expand. The Alabama Accountability Act (AAA) Scholarship Program has helped eligible students access private schools for more than a decade. The CHOOSE Act introduced education savings accounts, giving participating families more flexibility with qualifying educational expenses. And beginning January 1, 2027, the Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC) will create another opportunity to support students through scholarship-granting organizations. These programs serve different purposes, but together, they reflect a broader shift toward giving families more ways to pursue the education that works best for their children.

Parents don't change schools because they enjoy starting over. Changing schools can mean new routines, new teachers, new classmates and a whole new adjustment for a child. So when families make that decision, it's worth asking what is driving them to look for something different. Recent survey data from EdChoice and the National School Choice Awareness Foundation provide some answers. Together, the findings offer a clearer picture of what families experience when a school isn't meeting their child's needs and what they are looking for in a new educational environment.
