Alabama Prepares for the Largest School Choice Opportunity in History.
School choice in Alabama is entering a new chapter.
Last week, the U.S. Department of the Treasury released preliminary guidance for the new federal Education Freedom Tax Credit, a program scheduled to launch in 2027 that could significantly expand scholarship opportunities for families across the country. The program allows taxpayers to receive a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit of up to $1,700 for donations made to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations, which then provide scholarships for eligible K–12 students.
Alabama has already opted into the program, positioning our state to be among the leaders in implementing this new opportunity for families. The Treasury's latest guidance provides additional clarity for scholarship organizations and lays the groundwork for participation, compliance, and program integrity ahead of the 2027 launch.
For Alabama families, this is another sign that educational choice continues to gain momentum. Combined with existing opportunities such as the CHOOSE Act and the AAA scholarship programs administered by organizations like AOSF, the federal tax credit could create new pathways for students to access learning environments that best meet their needs.
While details are still being finalized, one thing is clear: Alabama is preparing for what many are calling the largest school choice opportunity in American history. AOSF will continue working with families, schools, donors, and policymakers to ensure Alabama is ready to make the most of these new opportunities as additional guidance becomes available.
