Understanding Alabama’s Growing School Choice Landscape

School choice in Alabama is expanding, giving families more opportunities to find the educational environment that best meets their child’s needs.


But with new programs and updates happening quickly, it can be challenging to understand how each opportunity works and how they fit together.


In the latest episode of Bama Knows Education, from Love Your School Alabama, we take a closer look at three key programs shaping the future of education in Alabama: the Alabama Accountability Act (AAA) Scholarship Program, the CHOOSE Act, and the new Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit.

The Alabama Accountability Act Scholarship Program

Since 2013, the AAA Scholarship Program has helped Alabama students access educational opportunities through scholarships funded by individuals and businesses who redirect a portion of their state tax liability.


The program continues to meet a critical need for families seeking options beyond their assigned public school. Demand remains strong, and thousands of Alabama students rely on these scholarships each year.


The CHOOSE Act

The CHOOSE Act, Alabama’s education savings account program, provides eligible families with funds they can use for approved educational expenses, including private school tuition, homeschooling resources, and other educational services.


As the program expands, more families are learning about the options available to them and how education savings accounts can provide greater flexibility.


The Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit

Beginning in 2027, the Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit will create another opportunity for eligible taxpayers to support educational choice.



This new program adds another layer to Alabama’s growing school choice landscape and works alongside existing programs to help increase opportunities for students across the state.

Every child learns differently. Every family has different priorities. And finding the right educational environment often starts with understanding the options available. In Alabama, those options continue to expand. The Alabama Accountability Act (AAA) Scholarship Program has helped eligible students access private schools for more than a decade. The CHOOSE Act introduced education savings accounts, giving participating families more flexibility with qualifying educational expenses. And beginning January 1, 2027, the Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC) will create another opportunity to support students through scholarship-granting organizations.
