A New Way for Alabamians to Support Student Success

July 20, 2026

Alabama has become a national leader in expanding educational opportunities for families. Through the Alabama Accountability Act (AAA) and the CHOOSE Act, thousands of students have gained access to schools and educational services that better meet their needs.

Beginning in 2027, Alabama taxpayers will have another opportunity to invest in students through the new federal Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC).

If you have a federal tax liability, you may be able to redirect up to $1,700 of the taxes you already owe into scholarships for K-12 students. Instead of sending those dollars to Washington with no say in how they're used, you can choose to help Alabama students access the educational opportunities they need.

Best of all, the EFTC works alongside Alabama's existing programs. Families may be able to combine, or "stack," scholarships from the EFTC with support from the AAA Scholarship and the CHOOSE Act, making it easier to afford tuition, tutoring, therapy, educational technology, special education services, and other qualified educational expenses.

The dollars are leaving your pocket either way.

The difference is that, beginning in 2027, you'll have a choice. You can let someone else decide where a portion of your federal tax dollars goes, or you can direct them toward helping Alabama students thrive.
