The Opportunity Your Tax Dollars Create

July 14, 2026

Every year, thousands of Alabama students receive scholarships through the Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund (AOSF), yet many eligible taxpayers don't realize they have the opportunity to help fund these scholarships using tax dollars they're already going to pay.

Here's what you need to know.

What is the AAA Scholarship?

The Alabama Accountability Act (AAA) Scholarship Program provides scholarships that help eligible students attend the school that best meets their educational needs.

Scholarships are awarded to qualifying low-income students and students with unique educational needs, giving families access to learning environments where their children can thrive.

For some families, that means attending a school with specialized academic support. For others, it's a school that better fits their child's learning style, offers a safer environment, or provides opportunities they simply couldn't access otherwise.

The goal is simple: ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed in the learning environment that's right for them.

How does the program work?

One of the biggest misconceptions about the AAA Scholarship Program is that it requires taxpayers to make an additional charitable donation.

It doesn't.

Instead, eligible Alabama taxpayers can choose to redirect a portion of their Alabama income tax liability to fund scholarships through the Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund. In return, they receive a dollar-for-dollar Alabama state income tax credit.

Donors are already paying Alabama state income taxes. The AAA Scholarship Program simply gives eligible taxpayers the opportunity to decide that a portion of their tax dollars will directly support educational opportunity for students across our state. In other words, rather than your tax dollars filling potholes, they can enrich our next generation of Alabama leaders.

It's a simple process:

  • Reserve your tax credit through the My Alabama Taxes portal.
  • Make your contribution to the Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund.
  • Receive a dollar-for-dollar state income tax credit, subject to program requirements and limits

Who benefits?

Every scholarship represents a student with unique goals, talents, and potential.

Some students have attended schools supported by an AAA Scholarship since kindergarten, giving them the consistency to grow and succeed year after year.

Others have overcome significant obstacles after finding a school where they finally felt supported and challenged.

Take Maleah Tigner.

Through an AAA Scholarship, Maleah attended Chambers Academy, where she became the school's first Black valedictorian. Her determination didn't just shape her own future. It inspired her father to return to school and earn his GED, proving that educational opportunity can have a ripple effect that extends far beyond one student.

Stories like Maleah's remind us that scholarships do more than help students attend a different school. They help open doors to brighter futures for families and communities across Alabama.

Why does this matter now?

The need for educational opportunity continues to grow.

Today, $38 million in Alabama tax credits remains available to reserve through the AAA Scholarship Program.

Those available credits represent more than dollars. They represent students waiting for the opportunity to attend the school where they can learn, grow, and reach their full potential.

Every reserved tax credit helps fund scholarships that change lives.

There’s a lingering misconception that private or Catholic schools aren’t equipped to serve students with disabilities. In Auburn, Alabama, one Catholic school is quietly proving otherwise. As an AOSF partner school and the only Catholic school within a 50-mile radius, St. Michaels Catholic School is offering families something increasingly rare: strong academics, intentional faith formation, and a learning environment that welcomes students with a range of learning needs, including dyslexia, hearing impairments, and vision challenges. And they’re not just “making it work.” They’re building a model designed for it.
