Celebrating 250 Years of Freedom and the Power of Educational Opportunity

July 1, 2026

This Fourth of July feels especially meaningful.

As our nation celebrates its 250th birthday, Americans will gather with family and friends to celebrate the ideals that have shaped our country for nearly two and a half centuries. Among those ideals are the enduring promises found in the Declaration of Independence: that all people are created equal and are endowed with the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Those words continue to inspire us today because they remind us that freedom is more than a historical concept. It is the opportunity to build a better future.

At the Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund, we believe that educational opportunity is part of that future.

Every child learns differently. Every family has unique hopes for their children's education. Whether it's a faith-based education, a specialized learning environment, a school with smaller class sizes, or a program that better meets a student's academic needs, families deserve the opportunity to choose the path that's right for them.

That opportunity continues to grow in Alabama.

Through the Alabama Accountability Act, thousands of students have already gained access to schools that better fit their needs. The CHOOSE Act is expanding educational options for even more families. And beginning in 2027, the new Education Freedom Tax Credit will create another way for donors to invest directly in educational opportunity while receiving a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit, subject to program limits.

Together, these programs reflect a simple but powerful idea: when families have more choices, students have more opportunities to succeed.

None of this happens without generous individuals and businesses who choose to invest in Alabama's children. Every scholarship awarded represents more than financial assistance. It represents hope, opportunity, and the belief that every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential.

As we celebrate America's 250th birthday, we're reminded that freedom has always carried with it a sense of responsibility. The freedom to give. The freedom to serve. The freedom to help open doors for others.

This Independence Day, we're grateful for those who make educational opportunity possible across Alabama. Your generosity helps families pursue the future they envision for their children, one scholarship at a time.

From all of us at the Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund, we wish you and your family a safe, joyful, and happy Fourth of July.

There’s a lingering misconception that private or Catholic schools aren’t equipped to serve students with disabilities. In Auburn, Alabama, one Catholic school is quietly proving otherwise. As an AOSF partner school and the only Catholic school within a 50-mile radius, St. Michaels Catholic School is offering families something increasingly rare: strong academics, intentional faith formation, and a learning environment that welcomes students with a range of learning needs, including dyslexia, hearing impairments, and vision challenges. And they’re not just “making it work.” They’re building a model designed for it.
